RICE SQUARE MOUNTAIN, 2019

Rice grains, 700 x 700 cm

The big square is simple and impressive at the same time. The 361 rice bunches pick up the structure of the floor. Their outlines form circles, their blur animate the rigid geometry. It is the encounter of the precision with the random. The act of sowing sounds. The rice field can be wandered trough with awareness. The rice does not germinate or nourish us physically. His presence, however, lets us feel his potential.

RICE CIRCLE LIGHT, 2019

Decentered in the room, the rice circle lies on the floor and resembles a lunar disc. He exudes calm, testifying to the long, concentrated work of the artist. The rice reflects light as the moon reflects the light of the sun. The circle is an archetype, the reference to the stars is its origin. He symbolizes perfection and refers to the secrets of life and death. The sleeping grains lie close by and side by side until awakened by the elements of light, water and earth to new life.

RICE JUWELS, 1–24, 2013–2019

24 so-called jewels stand majestically upright, unstable on the smallest floor area. Their tips aspire heavenwards. A breeze could make them tip over. Katharina Rähmi explains: „Its shape comes from the Asian world. A jewel is something very precious, also called grain or rice grain. It symbolizes growth, change and the constant return as a plant.“ The arrangement is reminiscent of an atomic model. Energy and movement are immanent to everything – but still materia and solid matter appear hard and immobile.

From up close, the white-painted rice appears vividly, from a distance like the highest peaks of snow-capped mountains, which strive against the sky, here fullness and emptiness meet.

Black ink on Chinese paper

The white Chinese paper is colored with black ink. From this, the previously painted rice grains emerge like stars in the night sky. The presentation is inspiried by throwing rice, a lived ritual that exists in similar forms worldwide. The rice grains fly easily and energetically through the air. The individual of the 24 leaves are all diffrent, but connect to a unit according to a handful of rice.

The artist draws the outline of rice grains over and over. The combination of writing and image fascinates her. The perfect concentration on the moment leads to a meditative state. As for calligraphic exercises, she folds the paper sheets in advance, creating units. Only later does she learn about the rice grid, whose folding forms the Chinese character for rice. No grain of rice is the same as the other. And depending on the viewing angle, the white ink is invisible on white paper.

RICE REFLECTIONS, 2019

Realized a silk craftsman in Kunming

The work explains the appreciation for the traditional craft of regional silk embroidery. The silkman in  Kunming, has embroidered by hand her picture template. The color gradations of the delicate silk threads together with the painted shadows create an enormous plasticity. This rice glows and tints into yellow, which makes it appear noble and like gold. The work of art has the form of Chinese scroll paintings. They preserve ancient cultural heritage, to which the artist feels very connected.
